Gurdwara Nanak Sar - Jhang

There are dozens of gurdwaras and religious institutes in India, Pakistan, Europe and North Africa named Nanaksar. Nanaksar or Nanak Sar, as far as I understand, means (sacred) Pond of Nanak (first guru of Sikhs. But in Pakistan there is a village 12 kms awary from  Jhang on Toba Tek Singh Road, which itself is known as Nanaksar (also spelt Nansksir). This small village houses an old gurdwara which give this village this name.

Guru Nanak Dev ji came to this village, during one of many of his journeys, which he undertook to learn and preach. It is a tradition of Sikhs to build gurdwaras to commemorate their gurus. So this gurdwara was also built following the same tradition. But I could not find when it was constructed. It is located at  31° 10' 2.03" N;  72° 22' 58.64" E.

Two young men greeted us, when we asked about the gurdwara. One of them lived in the building of the same gurdwara. His name was Imran son of Ghualam Mohammad. His family according to him migrated from Ambarsar (this is how a true Amritsari pronounces Amritsar), from a village Murad Pur. He runs a printing press. His friend also name Imran accopanied us. He works in State Life Insurance Company (thank God he did not try to sell us an insurance policy). His family also migrated from Jalandhar. Both were very friendly, cooperative and hospitable. True Pakistani Punjabi young men.

Nanaksar: Beautiful fields just outside the village (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar:  Main entrance of the gurdwara complex (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar: A closer view of the entrance (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar: Beautiful face of a deorhi or an inner building (22.03.2016.)

As can be seen in the above picture the entrance to the inner portions of the gurdwara is closed. So we went to another by lane and approached it from the hall, which exists at the backside of this deorhi.

Nanaksar:  Muhammad Imran s/o Ghulam Muhammad and Muhammad Imran (right) s/o Muhammad Anwar (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar: A Plaque on the hall (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar: Inside view of the deorhi (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar: Inner view of the derohi (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar:  Deohir from inside (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar: A small building between deorhi and the hall (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar: The main hall (may be Gurasthan or Langar Khana) (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar: The main hall (may be Gurasthan or Langar Khana) (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar: A room above the hall (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar: A view of the surrounding area (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar: View from the roof of the hall. The small square building and the deorhi from inside (22.03.2016.)

Nanaksar: A plaque at the front of the main hall (22.03.2016.)

In the above plaque, first of all the most important prayer of Sikh religion is written, which is called Mool Mantar. The words, transliteration and translation is given below:

Transliteration:
Ik oa(n)kaar sath naam karathaa purakh nirabho niravair akaal moorath ajoonee saibha(n) gur prasaadh ॥
aadh sach jugaadh sach ॥ hai bhee sach naanak hosee bhee sach ॥1॥

I have copied the above mantar and its translation from www.sikhiwiki.org. However, please correct me, if I have made any mistake unintentionally. As I am not familiar with the gurmukhi script. Though I have a desire to learn it and soon I shall learn it. It was not easy to read the rest of the writing, as it written on a stone and some words are difficult to read or even missing. After the Mool Mantar some names etc. are given, who had this gurdwara constructed or participated in it.

Well of Nanak Sar. Son of brother Bhagat Singh ji, son of brother Darbar Singh ji, son of brother Gurja Singh ji, this hall (constructed) by all the members of the society. Dharmsal (guest house) constructed in fifth month of 1454.

I am afraid the above translation is not perfect. It was translated by Jagmeet Singh. But the greatest mystery is that the year of construction is given as 1454, which if we consider as Samvat, which the Sikhs use, that means 1398 AD. But that is impossible, because Guru Nanak himself was born in 1469 AD. Perhaps that's why Imran, the person whose family is currently living there, told me that it is five hundred years old. Perhaps one of the few Sikhs who still visit this place, told him so.

While reading the Mool Mantar, I could not ignore the striking resemblance it has with the Surah Al Ikhlas. We know that Guru ji, was a well educated man and had got his education from Muslim scholars also. He also learned Arabic and Persian. Even later in his life he always kept the company of Muslim ulema and sufis.

Nanaksar: Sarovar (22.03.2016.)

The above picture is very important. Because most probably it was also a part of gurdwara complex. Due to some reasons and time constraints, I could not enter it. It also shows some remnants of sarovar, the sacred pond. Below are a few pictures of a small structures just at the edge of the village. This structure was perhaps a part of the shamshan ghat (cremation ground).

Nanaksar: A small building, probably remnants of a Shamshan Ghat (22.03.2016.)

The building on the left side in the above picture was probably also a part of this gurdwara. It is located behind the main hall. I could not visit this building and took a picture from outside. So this is one of my those posts, which I consider incomplete. I hope somebody will shed more light on the history of this gurdwara.

  2. Dear Tariq, I cant thank you enough for providing such valuable piece of history. I wanted to point out the the correct date written on stone is actually 1858. You are reading 8 as 4. Correct 4 is there at bottom. but in date it is 8, not 4. I have uploaded an image to indicate it better: http://baani.net/temp/nanaksar-jhang.jpg

    Dear Tariqamir
    Sat Sri Akal
I am Dr S S Sikka from Ludhiana, Punjab India. I have no words to say Thanks to you for your records on Nanak Sar, jhang. Name mentioned as Bhagat Singh, is our ancestor.
I am giving a brief history here about our ancestors.

The sub caste Sikka to us was given by GURU GOBIND SINGH JI at Anand pur sahib when Baba Bhagat Singh was serving as a labour and looking after the horses of the sikhs in the castle. Some one complained that Bhagat singh and his wife are taking their meals from the Langar ( Free meals for the followers/Sikhs). Guru Gobind Singh ji called upon Bhagat Singh and asked from him. Baba Bhagat Singh humbly replied
" I am collecting the undigested grains from the feacal material of the horses cleaning and drying the grains, grinding it to make flour for making Chapati and we both (husband and wife) consume it rather than taking our meals from the Langar (free kitchen).

Guru Gobind Singh ji was very happy by listening it and hugged him and send him to a place near Distt Jhang Maghiana (now in Pakistan) saying that Tuhadi hundi chalegi (Means by your signatures people will honour the bearer with money and it happened . The name of this place is NANAK SAR as GURU NANAK DEV JI visited this place while going to and coming back from Mecca and Madina.

    This place was a dense
forest and could not find the exact place, then he prayed. During early morning when he was meditating, Guru Gobind Singh ji told him to follow me in meditation. Baba Bhagat Singh ji followed, then Guru Gobind Singh ji ear marked the places for Darbar Hall(Gurudwara), Langar Hall, Sarover, Dharamsala etc.
In the morning when he wake up and visited the place which was told by Guru Gobind Singh ji when he was meditating, He observed that all the places were marked by Horse Foot (paur).
Later on Baba Bhagat Singh with the help of Sikh Sangat constructed as desired by Guru Gobind Singh ji.
This all was told to us by my father, who was told by his father and so on.

As told by my father, I am in the 8th generation of Baba Bhagat Singh Sikka
    With kind regards
